10 States with Highest Priced Assisted Living

By on April 26, 2013

Upscale assisted living Last year A Place for Mom (who operates this website) conducted a survey of the pricing of the thousands of assisted living communities in our network, and released the results as part of our 2012 Cost of Care Survey. The survey revealed a wealth of fascinating information about the cost of senior care, including the states where assisted living is most expensive.

Last week our blog asked the quest “Is Assisted Living Over Priced?” and concluded that evidence suggests it is not. Our post noted that assisted living costs vary depending on a number of factors. The quality of the community, the size of the accommodations, and the level of care provided are all variables at play. But the old real estate adage about pricing,  “Location! Location! Location!”, holds true for assisted living communities just as it it does for other kinds of properties. Location is probably the biggest cost factor for assisted living facilities. Assisted living communities in states with a high cost of living naturally tend to cost more than comparable assisted living communities in states with a lower cost of living.

Of course other factors are at play too. Alaska is near the top of the list, and it’s very likely the remoteness of the state and the facilities within it drive up operating costs, and thus increase the price for the consumer.

Here’s list of the 10 states where assisted living facility apartments are the highest. These figures are based on the average cost of a one-bedroom assisted living apartment in the state.

1. Maine: $4,671
2. Connecticut: $4,550
3. Delaware: $4,520
4. Alaska: $4,478
5. Massachusetts: $4,472
6. New Hampshire: $4,278
7.  New Jersey $4,197
8. Maryland $4,177
9. Vermont: $4,171
10. New York: $3,954

Next week we’ll highlight the 10 states with the most affordable assisted living care.
