Its center is located 20 miles (31 km) southwest of Washington, D.C. Although rural communities - densities between 200 and 500 per square mile (77 to 193 per square kilometer) - persist in the northern, southern, and western regions, around St. Mary's Church, Fountainhead Regional Park, and Clifton, Virginia, respectively, neighborhoods - densities between 1,600 and 2,200 per square mile (584 to 849 per square kilometer) - are located in the center and eastern portions, near Burke Lake Park and Burke, Virginia, respectively.
