At Sun Oak we focus on all aspects of our resident's wellness - mind, body and spirit. We learn about how our residents like to spend their days and we design our calendar around them. We look for experiences to offer and opportunities to reignite old passions. Our goal is to wow our residents by identifying what experiences are most important to them, and do what we can to make them happen in a meaningful way. Our Activities Program goes beyond the traditional. We have specific programs in place to help our residents make the most of every day. Celebrations Our Celebrations Program encompasses all the festivities that highlight traditional and non-traditional holiday events and programs throughout the year. These programs honor residents and include special birthday celebrations, holiday parties and a variety of other occasions. Some highlights of special celebrations have included Senior Prom, Oktoberfest, Barbeque/Western Days, Hawaiian Days, Cinco DeMayo, Chinese New Year and Live the Spirit Week. Discovery Living Our Discovery Living Program is designed to offer our residents opportunities to engage in creative and educational activities. Creative arts offerings may include innovative classes or small group offerings that introduce new skills, interests and leisure pursuits to our residents. These continuous learning opportunities may take the form of how to seminars and lectures on special subjects such as journaling, writing poetry, scrapbooking, or photography. Past classes have included watercolor and oil painting, crocheting, knitting, quilting, ceramics and card making. Throughout the month there are numerous opportunities to play games, discuss current events, join a book club or tackle a daily word puzzle. Growing Together Growing Together is a holistic program that enables our residents to have regular contact and voluntary responsibility for plants and pets in a homelike environment. Many of our residents have taken pleasure in planting and tending gardens throughout their lives and can continue to do so at our community. Large community gardens, mobile gardens or small plants tended indoors are all possibilities with our Growing Together program. Interactions with pets are also an important part of life at our community. Whether it is interaction with a community pet or spending time with visiting pets, we believe in supporting the significant health benefits associated with the opportunity to pet a friendly dog or stroke a purring cat. Of course our residents are always welcome to have pets of their own as well. Exercise and Movement The goal of our Exercise and Movement Program is to encourage independence and provide support for all of our residents to be as physically fit and active as possible. Our exercise classes are designed to improve cardiovascular function, muscle strength, stamina and endurance. Class offerings may include Tai Chi, Sittercise or Yoga. Some of our communities have special fitness equipment available and all of our communities offer our signature walking club, Stepping Out. Young-At-Heart Our Young-At-Heart Program gives our residents opportunities to interact with children and young adults of all ages. Whether it is a group of students visiting to provide entertainment or one-on-one visits from a local youth group to play board games, celebrate a holiday or just listen to special words of wisdom from an experienced senior, this program benefits everyone who participates. Connections Connections allows our residents to retain former contacts and roles with the community-at-large, establish new contacts and give back to the community through volunteerism, altruism, and contributions of time, resources or services. Some of our Connections activities have included special fundraisers for disaster relief, care packages for soldiers overseas and organizing teddy bear drives for children. Memory Improvement Program Researchers have concluded that the term Use It or Lose It has very real implications as it applies to memory and the aging brain. It has been proven that older adults can improve their memory abilities with regular cognitive exercise - our Memory Improvement Program is designed to help our assisted living residents who are beginning to experience memory loss. Specific components of the Memory Improvement Program include structured brain games, exercise, social support and nutrition. -
