To gain the most information about a community during your visit, use this assisted living checklist and ask:
- Are community staff friendly and kind?
- Are community meals delicious, nutritious and presented well?
- Are costs and fees clear and easy to understand?
- Are medical services available?
- Are nurses on staff?
- Are outdoor areas adequate for residents?
- Are residents able to individually control the thermostat in their rooms?
- Are residents content and engaged?
- Are restrooms senior-friendly with grab-bars?
- Are the community’s doorways wide enough for walkers and wheelchairs?
- Does a doctor visit the community?
- Does the community have clearly marked exits?
- Does the community have a comfortable temperature throughout the complex?
- Does the community have a friendly atmosphere?
- Does the community have good lighting to prevent falls?
- Is it easy to navigate and work your way around the community?
- Is it fire safe, with sprinklers, smoke detectors and a fire plan?
- Is the community clean and fresh-smelling?
- Is the location convenient for your family?
- Is there adequate security?
- Is there a care plan for each resident?
- Is there a resident’s committee?
- Is there care for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias?
- Is there scheduled transportation for residents?
- What activities does the community regularly plan for residents?
