WESH News in Orlando, Florida recently reported that an illegal, unlicensed assisted living home was shut down by state investigators after an unfortunate episode was brought to light. In the incident, “a resident of the home arrived at the emergency room unconscious and bleeding from the head. The man with him could not provide information other than that the victim is mentally challenged.” The man later admitted to giving the resident “a number of unknown medications all at once.” In the article, police note that they believe that this wasn’t an “isolated episode”.
The Importance of Choosing Licensed Providers
Sadly, there are people who engage in the unethical, illegal, and dangerous practice of operating unlicensed assisted living homes. This sad story is an important reminder to only choose appropriate licensed providers.
Providers that aren’t appropriately licensed are dangerous on multiple levels. Their staff are not trained, they are not insured should something go wrong, and they are outside the inspections system. Know your rights, make sure you’re familiar with the assisted living laws in your state. We list the training, staffing, and inspection requirements for assisted living in each state on our site.
